Gmail to risky for business adoption Gmail to risky for business adoption

I am always blown away when I hear of a business that has switched to Google mail to save a few dollars a year.
We’ve covered several times why Google is simply an ineffective business email service compared to Microsoft Exchange, but let’s take it further.
Here’s a troubling account of how a Gmail security breach almost cost this person his business.

Having your business email hacked presents a Pandora’s Box of new concerns compared to your personal email.
After a hacker gained access into the company’s Gmail address, he was able to setup a filter which forwarded specific emails to the hacker’s address before the email was completely deleted so that the user had no idea that he had ever received the email.
Long story short, the hacker was able to have the company’s Website domain transferred enabling him to hold the site for ransom.
Imagine going to your company’s Website only to find that your domain has expired and a hacker now has the rights to the address.
In this example, the company refused to purchase the domain back from the hacker and rightfully so. But by doing that, the business lost its great organic search results and had to start from scratch at a new domain name.
This example goes back to our previous posts about Google mail. Google makes great products for personal use. But in the end, Google is an advertising company, not an email provider. Using an email service designed to expand a Google’s advertising capabilities is not a sound business decision.
Email is one of the most important tools available to your business. Losing access to it or having a security breach could cost your company thousands of dollars. Thus, it is important to use a provider that is in the businesses of providing business email.
Microsoft Exchange is the business email service of choice throughout the world and it will continue to be the best solutions for the foreseeable future.
